The local community of Cessnock have a long and proud association with coal mining history and tradition. Austar Coal Mine is continuing this legacy and is the last remaining mine to produce coal in the Cessnock Area.

The Product

The Product
Austar Coal Mine produces a premium coking coal. It is characterized as the highest fluidity and lowest ash coking coal in Australia with low phosphorous and low alkalies. The seam is typically 4.8 – 6.5 m thick.

Coal Preparation
Once mined, coal is sent to the Coal Handling and Preparation Plant for crushing and washing to produce a high quality coking coal product for export. Coal is processed using a combination of dense medium cyclones and spiral techniques with greater than 92% recovery.
The wash plant has the capacity to process 520 tonnes per hour with stockpile capacity of 150,000 tonnes of raw coal and 300,000 tonnes of washed coal.

Coal Transportation
Washed coal is transported by rail 65km to the Port of Newcastle. Coal is then exported by ship around the world to a variety of customers and countries.

Longwall Mining

Longwall mining is a widely used, safe and reliable established method of underground coal mining used in Australia and overseas.

Longwall panels at Austar Coal Mine are designed to extract up to 220m wide, 1300m long and the full height of the seam. They range in depth from 400m to 530m below the surface.

Consecutive longwall panels are separated by pillars or sections of coal that are not mined. These pillars are the size of a football field and control the level of subsidence on the surface.
