About Us

The local community of Cessnock have a long and proud association with coal mining history and tradition. Austar Coal Mine (Austar) is continuing this legacy and is the last remaining mine to produce coal in the Cessnock Area. Austar is owned by Yancoal Australia Limited (Yancoal).

Austar is a deep underground coal mine located approximately 10km south west of Cessnock in the Newcastle coalfields of New South Wales, Australia. The mine is an aggregate of the former Pelton, Ellalong, Cessnock No 1 (Kalingo) Colliery and Bellbird South Collieries and has been in operation since 1916. Administration and Pit Top facilities are located on Middle Road, Paxton, NSW. Operations are permitted 24 hours, seven days a week. There are approximately 200 people employed at Austar. A locality plan and approved mining operations plan are attached below.

Austar produces a premium coking coal. It is characterized as the highest fluidity and lowest ash coking coal in Australia with low phosphorous and low alkalies. The seam is typically 4.8 – 6.5 metres thick. Up to 3.6 million tonnes per annum of run of mine (ROM) coal is approved to be mined onsite.

Once mined, coal is sent to the Coal Handling and Preparation Plant for crushing and washing to produce a high quality coking coal product for export. Coal is processed using a combination of dense medium cyclones and spiral techniques, with greater than 92% recovery. The wash plant has the capacity to process 750 tonnes per hour with stockpile capacity of 150,000 tonnes of raw coal and 300,000 tonnes of washed coal.

Washed coal is transported by rail approximately 65km to the Port of Newcastle. Coal is then exported by ship around the world to a variety of customers and countries.
